About Us

A warm welcome to the website for SI Leamington & Warwick.

SI stands for Soroptimist International, which is the world’s largest, service Organisation for women of today and Leamington & Warwick Club is a member of this organisation. It is committed to a world where women and children achieve their individual and collective potential, can realise their aspirations and have an equal voice in creating strong and peaceful communities world wide.

The Leamington & Warwick branch has been active since 1936. We are women (hence ‘soror’( who believe that women and children’s lives can be changed for the better (hence ‘optomists’)’

We are an active Club offering a varied programme of meetings and events throughout the year. Our members bring a wide range of experience which has, over the years enabled them to provide a vast array of services to the community, either at a voluntary, professional or personal level. Their ongoing commitment and support to raise funds for local charities, whilst also supporting many of the objectives that involve women and children of the world is evident in their involvement with SI Leamington & Warwick.

Club Meetings and events

We meet monthly in the evening – 6:30 p.m. for 6.45 p.m. start (with the exception of August) at the Episode Hotel in Leamington Spa, and these take the form of a business meeting and supper with guest speakers or other activities. One such recent activity was a music and movement evening, which preceded our supper, so we had opportunity to burn off some calories before our meal!

In addition to the meetings there is a programme of social events and fundraising activities. Our calendar of events is published in the Diary page of the website.

Local group clocks up over 1100 years of service to others.
When the Leamington and Warwick Soroptimists decided to see if their years of service could match the age of Warwick being celebrated this year, little did they realised that they would easily exceed the 1100 years since the founding of Warwick.
“We just wanted to see if we had achieved 1100 years of service to others in a variety of ways,” said Kate Booty, a recent recruit to the group. “I devised a simple questionnaire asking about care for family members, volunteering roles and employment that involved service to the community.” What no one expected was that they would exceed their 1100 year target by at least half a century!
Members have undertaken employment that ranges from teaching; working for organisations such as the RSPCA and WRVS; caring roles for hospital patients, the visually impaired, children and vulnerable adult to jobs that involve the provision of nourishing food, beautiful flowers and a pleasing urban environment.
But by far the most impressive figure was the amazing number of years of volunteering. It seems as if the ladies who join The Soroptimists all have a history of community involvement and a desire to make the world a better place long before they become part of the world wide Soroptimist movement. Current members have clocked up no less than four hundred and seventeen years as volunteers. Members have acted as trustees to charities, church flower arrangers, drivers for the visually impaired, school governors, CAB members, served on the Faith Forum and Patients’ forum and been involved with Meals on Wheels, Age UK and a vast range of community enterprises.
In case this looks as if the Soromtimists are very ‘worthy but dull’ members will agree that the monthly evening meetings held at The Eclipse in Leamington, are anything but dull. Last month they proved themselves to be not only ‘carers and sharers’ but ‘movers and shakers’ when Jahman Aggrey provided a musical accompaniment of African drumming and singing to the pre- dinner exercises enjoyed by all. And there is more food and fun anticipated at a Curry Lunch to be held in August in aid of the Warwickshire Young carers who are the chosen charity for 2014, a September coffee morning and the annual Swimathon in October.
President of the group, Santosh Kundi commented, “While we aim to enjoy ourselves we also work hard to support women and girls worldwide. Our speakers often reflect our concerns but we also find lots of opportunities for fun, food and friendship. If you would like to join us please look at the website for details.
